Emergency Medicine Physician, Board Certified
IFMGA licensed, AMGA Certified Mountain Guide
I am a residency-trained and board-certified physician specializing in Emergency Medicine, and one of 115 American Mountain Guides internationally licensed by the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association (IFMGA). In the U.S., I'm one of only two IFMGA mountain guides who are also physicians.
My first visit to the Rockies was in the late 70's. After finishing high school in New Hampshire, I came west and spent 10 years in Missoula, Montana before going to Medical School, graduating in 1992. I've lived in Bozeman, Montana since 1998, after I completed residencies in both Family Practice and Emergency Medicine. A desire to link medicine and mountain guiding led me to complete the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) guiding certification program in 2015.
I started skiing in New England in 1969 and climbing in the mid 1970's. Since then, I've undertaken 20+ Canadian ski hut tours, and climbed extensively in Alaska's Denali National Park, the Tetons, Yosemite National Park, the Cascades, Montana's Beartooths, the French Alps, and many other peaks and ranges in the U.S. and abroad. Guiding friends to my favorite crags and mountains is an extension of my years learning and perfecting the skills and techniques of mountain travel.
Some of the iconic and stand out routes I've done over the years:
The Becky Chouniard on S Howser Tower in the Bugaboos
I currently practice Emergency Medicine in Jackson, Wyoming and guide ski, rock and alpine disciplines independently as well as for EXUM Mountain Guides, San Juan Mountain Guides and Beartooth Powder Guides out of Cooke City, Montana. Most recently, I've guided ski mountaineering in Norway and I'm planning more specialized trips to the Arctic regions of the world including Norway, Svalbard and in the Alps of Europe.
Cirque of the Towers, Wind River range, Wyoming
In addition to providing high level guiding services, I provide medical consulting to a number of professional mountain guide services and organizations including the AMGA, EXUM Mountain Guides, San Juan Mountain Guides, The Certified Guides Cooperative and Rainier Mountaineering.
Beginning in January of 2017 I will be offering Continuing Medical Education programs in both Jackson, Wyoming and The Lofoten Island region of Norway. These will be ski touring programs with Mountain and Wilderness Medicine CME offerings. Please see the CME page for details.
